Design theme: Sustainability

🌍 The Experience

Step into a virtual design firm where the "office" spans two continents. In the Sunday Design Studio, students don't just learn about art—they use it as a universal language to tackle the world's biggest questions.

Working live with peers in Uganda, participants will translate the environmental insights of Hope Jahren’s The Story of More into a massive, two-panel mural. This is a fast-paced, "maker-space" environment where global conversation meets digital craft.

🎨 What Happens Each Week?

Every 45-minute session is precision-engineered to maximize creativity and connection:

  • The 10-Minute Spark: We dive into a weekly theme (Food, Water, Energy, or Waste). Students share "lived experiences"—comparing what a food system looks like in a US suburb versus a Ugandan city.

  • The 15-Minute Skill-Up: A rapid-fire tutorial in Adobe Express. Students master professional digital techniques like background removal, layer masking, and generative AI styling to bring their sketches to life.

  • The 20-Minute Co-Lab: The heart of the program. Students jump onto a Shared Adobe Canvas with their Ugandan partners. They remix each other's work, leave feedback, and build a unified visual story in real-time.

  • Professional Tech Skills: Students gain fluency in Adobe Express, a leading industry tool for digital design and social storytelling.

  • Cultural Intelligence: By navigating a 7,000-mile distance and a 7-hour time gap, students develop the soft skills required for the 21st-century global workforce.

  • Environmental Advocacy: Participants move from being "consumers" of climate news to "creators" of sustainability solutions.

  • The Physical Legacy: The digital designs created on Sundays will be printed and hand-painted onto rollable fabric for a traveling international exhibition.

@ Hidden Villa, USS Hornet

Impact & Adventure: The Field-to-Fleet Residency
The Experience:
This isn't just a residence camp—it’s a high-stakes Social Innovation Residency. Over five days, students transition from the organic redwoods of Hidden Villa to the historic steel decks of the USS Hornet. By merging cutting-edge technology with global artistic collaboration, campers solve real-world problems, build international bridges, and document their journey for a global audience.

The Three Impact Tracks
Global Canvas Project (Uganda): Lead a cross-continental art movement. In collaboration with youth in Uganda, students co-design and paint a large-scale mural centered on the UN Sustainable Development Goals, proving that art has no borders. Online lessons here.

Drone Camp (SkyScan Mapping Expedition): Master the sky to tell the story of the land. Students use Drones and 360° cameras to create immersive visual data and "Virtual Tours" for Google Maps, preserving the legacy of our farm and ship.

Robotics (Kinetic Forge Lab: Build the future of autonomous aid. Students use Micro:bits and 3D printing to engineer custom hardware for Robot Dogs, deploying them for environmental sensing in the forest and structural inspections on the carrier.

Last day will be at USS Hornet.

Redwood Adventure: FINAL PAINTING @Portola

Redwood Adventure: FINAL PAINTING @ Portola is the culminating chapter of an international creative journey connecting Uganda and the United States through art, culture, and storytelling. Set in the majestic redwood forest of Portola, this immersive outdoor experience brings together artists, collaborators, and community members to witness the final live painting born from a cross-continental exchange of ideas, histories, and visions.

This project bridges two worlds—rooted in the landscapes, traditions, and lived experiences of Uganda, while unfolding within the natural grandeur of California’s redwoods. The final painting represents more than an artwork; it is a shared narrative of collaboration, resilience, and creative unity across borders. As the piece comes to life in real time, guests are invited to reflect on the power of art to transcend geography, language, and culture.

Surrounded by nature, music, and collective energy, Redwood Adventure: FINAL PAINTING @ Portola is both a celebration and a closing ceremony—honoring the journey, the relationships formed, and the stories carried from Uganda to the USA. This is a moment to gather, witness, and connect, where global creativity meets the timeless presence of the redwoods. 🌍🌲🎨
