Sleep on a WWII aircraft carrier. Ferry into San Francisco and Oakland. Be part of a book that gets published.
DAYS OUT
Ferry across the Bay to San Francisco. Historic streetcar down the Embarcadero. Climb through a WWII submarine at Fisherman’s Wharf. Sea lions at Pier 39, a vintage arcade, lunch on the wharf. Next day, ferry to Oakland — FDR’s presidential yacht, Jack London Square, the waterfront.
NIGHTS ABOARD
Dinner in the crew’s mess. Then the ship is yours — real logbooks and photographs, WWII planes on the hangar deck, crew spaces and the flight deck after dark, with historians who know every inch of her.
THE BOOK
Everything students find feeds a real book about the USS Hornet, headed for a real publisher. Students join the research team and are credited in the book. When it comes out, they’re invited back to the ship for the book tour to present their work.
Bunk where the sailors bunked. Lights out at 2200.
What will students do at USS Hornet Boarding Camp?
Day 1. Check in on the pier, board, stow gear, safety drill, dinner in the crew’s mess. Evening: first research session with the museum historian, about two hours — what the book needs from CV-8 and CV-12. Lights out 10pm.
Day 2. Ferry to San Francisco, streetcar to Fisherman’s Wharf. Ninety minutes aboard a WWII submarine, the main research stop. Liberty ship from the dock, arcade museum, lunch, free time. Back for dinner, then a VIP tour of crew spaces, hangar deck and flight deck, about ninety minutes.
Day 3. Ferry to the Oakland waterfront. Presidential yacht from the dock, historic square, lunch, free time. Back for dinner, then the longest research block — two to three hours in the archives and with the WWII aircraft.
Day 4. Morning on the flight deck, last photographs. Walk to the Alameda shore, beach time, picnic lunch. Ninety minutes turning the week into a presentation. Mid-afternoon: students present to families aboard ship. Pickup after.
What should participants bring?
Wear to the ship: closed-toe shoes, jacket or sweatshirt.
Pack in a backpack, carry-on size. No rolling or hard-shell bags — you carry your own gear up the pier and down steep ladders.
Bedding: sleeping bag, twin sheet, pillow.
Clothes: one change for the morning, plus sleeping clothes.
Also: toiletries, water bottle, flashlight, ear plugs, one or two sealed snacks, notebook and pen, small bills for the vending machines.
Don’t bring: open-toed shoes, hair dryers or straighteners, tablets or handheld games, open food or drink containers, weapons or anything flammable. Skirts and dresses don’t work on the ladders.
No cell signal aboard. Put phones on airplane mode — there are very few places to charge.

CAMP REFUND POLICY
To help us prepare for a great camp experience for everyone, we ask that any cancellations be made at least one week before your child’s scheduled start date.
Cancellations made at least one week in advance are free of charge.
Cancellations made within one week of the camp start date will incur a $50 cancellation fee.
Registration terms and release
Liability and Medical Release Agreement: I, the undersigned adult, on behalf of myself and my child(ren) assume all risks and hazards reasonably related to the conduct of the program.
Further, I do hereby release and hold harmless Compass Point (CP) Mentorship, its elected and appointed officials and employees, and organizer, sponsor, supervisor, contracted facilitator, or any volunteer connected with the program from any and all claims, injuries, damages, losses and suits, including attorney fees, arising out of or in connection with the program.
I acknowledge that I have familiarized myself with the description of the activities, understanding the hazards and my child(ren)’s personal limitations, and knowingly assume all risks. In the event of a medical emergency,
I authorize transportation to the nearest appropriate medical facility, and authorize emergency medical care if no one listed on the MIF (Medical Information Form) can be reached. If applicable, I authorize CP Mentorship facilitators, to administer medication to my child as outlined on the MIF form, and release from all liability said facilitators
for any injury resulting from the administration of those medications, provided all medications are administered in accordance with the schedule and conditions. In the absence of a signature, payment of fee and participation in the program shall constitute acceptance of the conditions set forth in this release.
I grant full permission to use any photographs, videotapes, motion pictures, recordings or any other record of this program for any CP Mentorship informational or promotional use.
I am fully aware of the special dangers and risk inherent in the activity, including physical injury, death, or other consequences that may arise or result directly or indirectly from the activity.
Being fully informed as to these risks and in consideration of the privilege of participating in CP Mentorship's summer camp, I hereby assume all risk or injury, damage, and liability and waive any right of recovery from or to bring suit against CP Mentorship for any personal injury, death, or other consequences arising our of my voluntary participation of the activity.
